Virginia Beach, Va. - A Virginia Beach teacher pleaded guilty on Tuesday to misdemeanor sexual battery for spanking a student, but denied he abducted her.

Michael Shanklin was a math teacher at Landstown High School when the incident took place.

A student told police Shanklin spanked her with a belt in January for not doing her homework.

In July officials say Shanklin tried to kill himself.

Because Shanklin only pleaded guilty to the sexual battery charge he's still on trial for the felony abduction.

The judge said he'd make a decision on that charge in December.
