Police say a 28-year-old Beach woman has been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty after police say they found a dog that had been stabbed and beaten.

Authorities received the call on Friday, August 17, 2012 about animal cruelty at a residence in the 5800 block of Roxbury Place in the Lake Edwards area of the City.

Police say when they arrived, they located a female mixed breed named Angel that had been stabbed and beaten by the suspect. The dog was listed in critical condition and taken to a local Emergency Veterinary Hospital for treatment.

During their investigation, officers learned that a family member of the suspect called the police and tried to stop the suspect from further abuse.  The police transported the suspect to a local hospital for an evaluation.

Animal Control now has custody of the dog.

The suspect has been identified as Heather Tabron, 28, of the 5800 block of Roxbury Place, Virginia Beach. She has been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty and was released on a summons.  Tabron is the owner of the dog.

Angel is still recovering in the care of a Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center foster parent.

The Friends of Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center www.beachpetpals.org are assisting with the cost of her medical care.

This case remains under investigation.
