Man arrested for stealing cab, shooting driver in Newport News

Newport News, Va. – Newport News police have arrested a man for stealing a cab and shooting its driver Friday night.

 At approximately 7:38 pm, police received a call of a possible carjacking and shooting in the 600 block of Rhoda Drive.

When officers arrived, they located a 41 year old Associated Cab driver who had been shot and his cab had been stolen by an unknown black male.

The driver was transported to an area hospital with possible life threatening injuries, then later was moved to a Southside hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

The empty cab was located a short time later at the dead end of Chester Road. The suspect, 34-year old Malik Stanley Hall of Newport News was apprehended a short distance away from the cab, hiding near a creek.

The investigation revealed that the driver picked up Hall in the area of Deloice Crescent and Denbigh Blvd. and was to take him to the area of Dodges Chicken on Jefferson Avenue.

When they arrived in the area of Rhoda Drive and Cynthia Court, Hall allegedly shot the driver, took an undisclosed amount of money and then fled in the cab. As he fled, he struck three other vehicles.

Hall was charged with numerous charges including carjacking, robbery, aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a stolen firearm, hit & run, and discharging a firearm within city limits.
