VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - 19-year-old William Clifford of Virginia Beach grew up volunteering. He is the grandson of the founders of Operation Smile, a non-profit that provides surgeries to people born with cleft palate.

When Clifford had the opportunity to travel around the world to volunteer and learn Spanish, he took it.

However, his trip was cut short. Clifford said he had to leave Ecuador early due to the coronavirus.

Getting back in the United States was a challenge, but he eventually made it.

Since returning, he has been leading the efforts with Operation Smile, working to help both healthcare workers and local restaurants.

The group places orders at restaurants and then delivers the free food to medical staff at various healthcare facilities.

Clifford has been volunteering six days a week, and the group started doing this about three weeks ago. He said the experience has been rewarding and said he is glad to help his community through this difficult time.

Clifford starts college in Georgia this fall, and News 3 wishes him the best of luck!
