NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Newport News Police are investigating a robbery that happened at the J&G Food Mart in the 1500 block of 27th Street.

It happened Monday just before midnight.

When officer arrived, they talked to the store clerk, who said she was taking out the trash when a man grabbed her. She tried to get away and was cut on her right arm.

"Then he grabbed my hair again. He had the gun right here. Then he made me put all of the cigarettes inside of the bag. I saw a gun. My brain suddenly stopped. I couldn't even think of anything. I was just thinking about my two kids," says the clerk.

The robber forced her back into the store at gunpoint and told her to open the register. The clerk complied and put money and cigarettes into a plastic bag. Then, he left through the back door.

"I grabbed the phone and dialed 911 but it didn't work because my hands were shaking so hard. I dialed it again then went inside the cooler and told the guy we just got robbed. You need to call 911."

Medics treated the clerk for her cut.

The robber is described as a black man wearing a black jacket and blue jeans. He was armed with a knife and gun.

A coworker was in the cooler area during the robbery and didn't witness the incident.

Police are still investigating the incident.
