NEW YORK – Less than one week after benching Eli Manning, the New York Giants bench the man who made the call to bench the two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback.
Head coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese were both fired Monday – one day after New York lost its 10th game of the season. McAdoo was in his second season as head coach.
According to the team website, McAdoo becomes the first Giants coach to be dismissed during a season since Bill Arnsparger in 1976. Arnsparger was 0-7 when he was relieved of his duties. The Giants’ 2-and-10 record is their worst through 12 games since that season. Reese was in his 11th season as general manager.
“Steve and I spoke after yesterday’s game in Oakland and agreed to talk again today,” team president John Mara told Giants.com. “This morning, we decided in the best interest of the franchise that we would relieve Jerry and Ben of their duties, effective immediately. This season has been incredibly disappointing for the organization and our fans, and while it would be ideal to make these kinds of decisions at the conclusion of the season, we simply felt now is the time to prepare for a fresh start.”
Last week’s decision to bench Manning and start Geno Smith ended Manning’s streak of 210 consecutive starts – the second longest streak in NFL history.
Interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo will reportedly make the decision to reinsert Manning as the team’s starting quarterback. New York hosts the Cowboys Sunday.
