NORFOLK, Va. – A local battalion chief charged with driving while intoxicated after wrecking his car on the interstate in Norfolk pleaded guilty on Monday.
Suffolk Fire Battalion Chief Craig Abraham was charged after the incident in May. Officials said he crashed his red Ford on I-64 in Norfolk at the 4th View exit.
Police reports show several witnesses called saying they saw Abraham driving erratically, weaving in and out of traffic before hitting the guard rails.
People nearby saw the crash and tried to help.
At the time, Suffolk fire officials told News 3 Abraham still worked for the department but would not confirm whether or not he was placed on administrative leave.
In court on Monday, Abraham pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 12 months in jail, with 11 months and 20 days suspended. He will serve the remaining 10 days on the weekends, beginning December 9 at 6 a.m.
He also had his driver's license suspended and must complete the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program.
