HAMPTON, Va. - A Vietnam Veteran from Hampton is getting a much need new roof built Thursday.

Colony Construction, an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred contractor, will be installing a new roof for Vincent McVicker, a veteran of the Vietnam War, as part of Owens Corning’s national Roof Deployment Project.

“It was in really, really bad shape," Herbert Paynter, Jr. with Colony Construction said. "The back of the house was a little bit worse than what I thought it would be, so we’re having to put a lot off framing members up back there.”

The project is part of a partnership with Habitat for Humanity to provide homes to veterans in need.

“We like to give back to the community. We’re in an area where we have a lot of military. The military supports this area," Paynter explained.

McVicker's roof has been untouched since the 1950s and had needed repairs.

But after a windstorm, he knew it was time to replace it.

“It got to the point where after a wind storm that we had some of the shingles blown off and replaced that it just kept getting progressively worse," McVicker told News 3. "By that time I was retired, living on social security and a small VA pension.”

When he reached out to Colony Construction they offered to do it free of charge with the help of Owens Corning Roofing and Habitat for Humanity.

“It makes me feel great. It really does.  It makes me feel - it makes me wonder, why," McVicker said.

The roof should be completed by Friday.

Paynter said Colony Construction plans to do these projects annually.
