NORFOLK, Va. - A police officer was shot and a suspect killed in an Ocean View shooting late Sunday night.

Scene of shooting in Ocean View

The officer was shot in the chest, but was wearing a Kevlar vest. He was taken to Sentara Leigh Hospital and will survive, according to a department spokesperson. The officer was treated and then released.

Officers got the call for a man with a gun around 14th Bay Street on Sunday night at around 11:15 pm. They tried to make contact with the man at an apartment, but weren't successful.

The officers created a perimeter and then the man shot the officer, Cpl. Melinda Wray said.

Other officers then shot and killed 39-year-old Tyson Chad Williams, Wray said. The officers tried to provide first aid, but weren't able to keep the man alive. He died on scene.

State Police will handle the investigation as is policy when there is a deadly officer involved shooting.

It's department policy for officers to have body cameras. It's unclear if it was activated, Wray said.
