VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - An overnight water main break in Virginia Beach cut off water to Windsor Oaks residents and caused a portion of S. Plaza Trail to collapse.
Virginia Beach officials tell News 3 a car hit a fire hydrant around 8 p.m. Sunday night. The hydrant is located on S. Plaza Trail between Windsor Oaks Boulevard and Windsor Gates Road.
The impact from the vehicle broke the water line and caused approximately 30,000 gallons of water to flow into the street. The saturated ground gave way underneath the pavement and caused the road to collapse.
As the work was underway, homes in the Windsor Woods neighborhood had no water or may have had low pressure as public works and public utility crews made the necessary repair.
The water has since been restored to residents.
Both lanes of S. Plaza Trail were closed in both directions because of the road collapse. However, crews have completed work repairing the road and both lanes are now back open.
