PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A 6-year-old girl was hit by a Portsmouth school bus on Friday morning.

Portsmouth Police say the bus was traveling on Lincoln Street and Piedmont Avenue when the girl ran out in front of the bus.

The bus was not traveling at full speed but it did run into the girl and knocked her to the ground.

Police say she does have a bump on the head but her injuries are non-life threatening. She was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

News 3 spoke to the child’s family who had to pull her from under the bus after she was hit. They said she also suffered an injury to her hand.

Cousin Anthony Barnes said the driver’s ‘stop’ sign was not out when the child crossed in front of the bus and he does not believe the driver saw her. “She was under the bus (once it stopped) totally under the bus and I had to stop her (the driver) a second time to inform her that the baby was under the bus she stopped she panicked,” said Barnes.

The incident is under investigation.

The driver is not facing any charges.
