Suspect arrested in hit-and-run crash that killed Gloucester woman in York County

YORK COUNTY, Va. – Newport News man arrested for crash that killed an 81-year-old woman Monday night.

Virginia State Police worked to identify 32-year-old Arthur Lee Harris as the driver of a vehicle that he rented and later crashed in the incident.

An 81-year-old Gloucester woman was killed late Monday in the three-vehicle hit-and-run crash in York County.

The crash occurred at 8:54 p.m. on Denbigh Boulevard, east of Route 17/George Washington Memorial Highway.

According to Virginia State Police, a 1996 Ford Ranger and a 1998 Lincoln Town Car were traveling westbound on Denbigh Boulevard when a 2015 Chrysler 300 traveling eastbound veered into the westbound traffic and sideswiped both vehicles.

The Ford Ranger ran off the road and into a ditch. The Lincoln Town Car spun out of control and came to a rest in the roadway.

The driver of the Ford Ranger, 81-year-old Doris Jean Wright of Gloucester, suffered major injuries and was transported to Mary Immaculate Hospital where she later died as a result of her injuries.

Troopers say Arthur Lee Harris, the driver of the Chrysler 300, ran off the road and into a ditch where fled the scene on foot. Newport News Police K-9 units were called to assist in an attempt to locate Harris but they were not able to find him.

Harris later admitted himself to Mary Immaculate Hospital Tuesday morning with serious injures. He was then transported and escorted to Riverside Hospital were he was later charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and Felony Hit and Run.

Denbigh Boulevard remained closed overnight in both directions. It reopened just after 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.
