Norfolk motel barricade situation ends peacefully after 10 hours

NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk Police responded to a barricade situation at the Econo Lodge Little Creek in the 7900 block of Shore Drive Thursday.

Police dispatchers said they received a call at 9:22 a.m. reporting that a psychiatric patient has barricaded himself inside the hotel.

Norfolk Police say Chesapeake Police officers were trying to serve a warrant on the man when he barricaded himself inside, armed with a gun.

Police said the situation ended peacefully after the man surrendered to them around 7:30 p.m.

The suspect broadcast parts of the situation on Facebook Live. He was live while surrendering to police.

He also called News 3 and proclaimed his innocence saying he was a 'victim of the system'. News 3 encouraged the man to call police and to peacefully end the situation.

Numerous negotiators and the Norfolk Police Bomb Squad were on scene.

Southbound Shore Drive was closed in the area due to the active situation.

The suspect, Clifton Newsome, was charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
