NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A young woman was found dead in Newport News and now detectives are trying to figure out what happened to her.

People coming to Abbington Landing community returned home to find yellow police tape surrounding several of the homes on Marcus Drive.

Police said they got a call about the incident at 5:15 p.m. Thursday night.

Inside of a townhome, police said they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound.  The victim was identified as 23-year-old Montia Poindexter.

Police say a neighbor was caring for the victim's 3-year-old son. The child has since been placed in the care of a relative.

“I’m at a loss for words kind of. I feel bad for the family,” said Steven Foltz, “It's shocking… it's a nice quiet neighborhood. You don't really think of anything like this happening.”

Police had a section of the road shut down and were only letting in people who live enter. They were executing a search warrant at the home to try and uncover more evidence.

Police said someone called 911 when they spotted the victim's front door open.

“It's a quiet neighborhood. We're half military and a half locals,” said Jeff Baker, “I feel sorry for the family that lost one. I hope they find out what happened.”

Police said no one has been arrested. They ask anyone with information about this crime to call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP
