NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A deadly overnight shooting is causing detectives to be at the crime scene for over 15 hours gathering evidence.

Newport News police say 51-year-old Eduardo Hernandez Amezcua was found shot in the head. He was taken to the hospital and died.

They say another man had facial injuries and was also transported to the hospital.

The incident happened just after 1:30 a.m. in a home near the intersection of 31st Street and West Ave.

On Thursday police said they had warrants for a suspect in the hospital. The warrants have not been served because the suspect is in the hospital and once he is released he will be taken into custody.

Police say a woman was inside of a nearby unit when shots were fired.

"I heard pop pop pop pop pop. Too close to home," said one woman who did not want to be identified.

The recent violence has some neighbors fearful.

"I went to the back room to talk to my husband and he said what's wrong. I said my heart is beating out I heard gunshots.  I don't know where they came from it's too close to the house and I want to move," said the woman.

Victor Harmon who lives nearby is also tired of all the shootings.

"The shooting and stuff is crazy. Why do you have to shoot?" Said Harmon.

A section of 31st street was blocked off for hours.

People trying to get to the shipyard had to find a different gate to enter and exit because the gate at the end of 31st street was closed.

Many said they wonder what investigators discovered inside the house that is causing this investigation to take so long.

"There is no need to pull out a gun ....  because a gun takes peoples lives," said Harmon.
