free-turkeyCHESAPEAKE, Va. – It’s not every day you leave a traffic stop with a free turkey but that’s what’s happening to drivers in Chesapeake Friday.

In an effort to spread holiday cheer, police officers pulled drivers over for various violations.

After explaining to them why they were pulled over, officers gave them a warning and a free dinner.

Officers are handing out about 100 turkeys with the help of several other organizations including the Chesapeake Jubilee and Farm Fresh.

They hope this is a step toward building a better relationship with the people they serve.

Jalisa McKeithan says she’s grateful for the effort.

“Christmas time is coming up. I’m trying to get stuff for my kid and bill and all of that and still trying to work and make things happens and life just happens. And I really do appreciate that from the bottom of my heart,” McKeithan explained.

Captain Doug Draper, who gave McKeithan the turkey, says he’s planning to follow up with her in the near future.
