National Gingerbread House Day is celebrated every year on December 12th.

Gingerbread was the favorite food of an Armenian monk, Gregory of Nicopolis. He brought it to Europe around 992AD and taught French Christians how to bake it. Gingerbread was often used in religious ceremonies. It was baked to be sturdy and was molded into images of saints.

The idea of a gingerbread house originated in the tail of Hansel and Gretel. German gingerbread guilds made the idea of gingerbread houses more festive.
