Thomas Bonney Jr. was charged with robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Police have charged and arrested a man suspected of robbing a bank last week.

Officers responded to the Wells Fargo at 5700 Portsmouth Blvd. Friday afternoon after the bank’s hold-up alarm was activated.

When they arrived, they confirmed the bank was robbed and worked with employees to get a description of the suspect.

Police say the man came into the bank and handed the teller a note demanding money and told them he had a gun.

The bank teller triggered the silent alarm and placed bait money into the bag with other stacks of money and gave it to the suspect.

The suspect left the business. Shortly after, officers located the suspect at Harrower Court and Maurice Street and took him into custody.

Police say Thomas Bonney Jr. was charged with robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Bonney, 42, is currently in the custody of the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office.
