NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – TSA officers at the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport stopped a Smithfield man from bringing a loaded gun on an airplane.

On Monday, TSA officers detected a 9 mm semi-automatic gun loaded with 17 rounds in the man’s carry-on bag as he was passing through the airport checkpoint. They detected the gun using the checkpoint X-ray machine.

TSA officers contacted the Newport News Public Safety Office. Police took the gun and ammunition and cited the man on a state weapons charge.

Passengers are permitted to travel with firearms in checked baggage if they are unloaded, packed in a hard-side case, locked, and packed separately from ammunition. Then the firearm must be taken to the airline check-in counter.
