Newport News man accused of assaulting girlfriend, wanted on other charges arrested

26-year-old Samuel Cooper, warrants for Maliciously Shoot/Throw into Occupied Building, Possession of Firearm by Felon, two counts of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, Attempt to Commit Non-Capital Felony, Reckless Handling of a Firearm, Assault on a Family Member, and two counts of Failure to Appear.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – On November 18 police were dispatched to a shooting that occurred near the intersection of 21st Street and Chestnut Avenue.

Officers were dispatched to the location around 10:15 p.m. and they found the victim, a 22-year-old Newport News woman who believed she had been shot by her boyfriend.

He was identified as 26-year-old Samuel Cooper.

The victim said that she had gotten into a verbal altercation with Cooper which led him to assault her in the head.

The victim stated after the assault, she saw a gun in his hand and Cooper running back towards the house that she was in.

She stated she heard a shot and felt something strike both of her legs. Officers checked the victim and determined that she was not shot. A bullet hole and fragments were located inside the residence that was occupied by the victim’s cousin at the time. The victim stated that Cooper fled the scene in a vehicle after the incident.

On Wednesday Cooper was seen by police in the 1300 Block of Roanoke Avenue.

During a foot pursuit Cooper fled to a nearby residence.

Officers and Detectives from the Violent Crimes Reduction Task Force were able to track Cooper and took him into custody.

Cooper had outstanding warrants for the offense on November 18 and other unrelated charges.
