NORFOLK, Va. – The final section of the Elizabeth River Trail re-opened in Norfolk on Thursday after undergoing improvements and enhancements over the past few years.
The Elizabeth River Trail is a biking and pedestrian trail in the City of Norfolk that has transformed several former railroad rights-of-ways, connected predominantly by off-road and some on-road trails, into an urban trail.
Sections of the Elizabeth River Trail were closed to the public since Midtown Tunnel construction preparations began in December of 2012.
Approximately $100,000 worth of permanent roadway improvements were incorporated along Redgate Avenue, Stockley Gardens, Olney Road and Botetourt Street to provide a viable detour during the closure and increase safety for trail enthusiasts.
Enhancements include sidewalk restorations; the repair and replacement of sewer covers; additional pedestrian signage; freshly painted crosswalks; and a paved loop connection linking to the upgraded main trail.
These improvements will be permanently incorporated into the Norfolk Bikeways and Trail Network.
