Man charged with DUI after crashing into Portsmouth home; passenger in critical condition

PORTSMOUTH, Va - Two people were injured and had to be extracted from the vehicle they were in after it crashed into a home early Tuesday morning, according to police.

img_1393The accident happened just after midnight in the 3000 block of George Washington Highway, near Elm Avenue in Portsmouth.

There was significant damage to the house, porch and fence. The vehicle also knocked down the side of a pool.

Medics removed the adult male driver and adult male passenger from the vehicle and took them to a hospital for treatment.

The passenger's injuries are considered life threatening and he remains in the hospital in critical condition.

According to police, speed and alcohol were major factors in the crash and the injuries sustained by the passenger were of a direct result of not wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the vehicle, 21-year-old Jeremy W. Miller of Chesapeake, has been charged with DUI and driving on a revoked license.

Miller is being held in the Portsmouth City Jail.
