PHOENIX, Ariz. – Police were investigating a homicide after bodies of two men were found in a crashed car early Monday morning.

The victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds, Phoenix Police Lt. Paul Taylor. The driver was pronounced dead behind the wheel

A passenger was pulled from the vehicle by the Phoenix Fire Department and treated by paramedics. He died at the scene.

Police described the victims as Hispanic between 20 and 30 years old.

Officers were calling it “a major crime scene.” A long gun was found inside the car, Taylor said.

“At this point, it’s difficult to tell whether it’s gang-related,” Taylor said.

A number of police units were called to the scene in the area of 31st Avenue and Pierce Street just around 4:45 a.m.

Taylor said something came to the attention of officers examining the car.

“There are multiple (gunshot) strikes into the side of the vehicle,” he said.

Investigators believe the shooting took place within blocks of where the car ended up.

“It’s obvious they were shot in a different location and that, for whatever reason, the vehicle continued from the location they were shot to this poor victim’s house here,” Taylor said.

A family inside the home was asleep when the vehicle smashed through a low wall in front of the home and came to rest near the front door.

“This has nothing to do with the Maryvale serial shooter. The nature of this crime is significantly different from what we’ve been seeing with the serial shooter,” Taylor said.

“We don’t believe there is a shooter running through the neighborhood,” he added.
