NORFOLK, Va. – City Manager Marcus Jones is leaving Norfolk to take a position in Charlotte, News 3’s Kurt Williams first reported on Tuesday night. Mayor Kenny Alexander confirmed Jones will serve as Charlotte’s city manager.

Jones has been city manager since February 2011. Before that, he worked in the city as the director of budget and grants management and as the assistant city manager from 2004 to 2009.

Kenny Alexander said “As someone who has known him for years, I am pleased that he has decided to accept this appointment.  I met Marcus early in his career during his service as a staff member for the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission.  His intellect, innovation, and diligence left an impression on both sides of the aisle during his service as Deputy Secretary of Finance during then Gov. Mark R. Warner’s administration.”

News 3’s source said, “It’s an incredible loss for Norfolk, but very fortunate for the city of Charlotte.”

The source says the search for a replacement for Jones will begin soon.

Charlotte’s City Council is expected to announce a new city manager tomorrow, the Charlotte Observer reports.
