ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Police in Elizabeth City say a man has died from injuries he sustained when he crashed a truck into a building Friday night.

The Elizabeth City Police Department says officers responded to West Eringhaus Street just after 8 p.m. Friday night for reports of a panel truck driving erratically.

According to police, the 2009 Isuzu Panel Truck was traveling east when it crossed the center line and west bound travel lanes and exited the roadway.

At that point, the truck hit a utility pole and a large business sign at 900 W. Eringhaus Street before coming to a rest inside the Rochelle building located at 806 W. Eringhaus Street.

The driver of the truck was identified as Jeffrey Allen Hughes, 34, of Elizabeth City.

Police say Hughes was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he died of his injuries.

Right now, police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
