Letter sent home to students about the incident

According to Portsmouth Public Schools, around 8:30 a.m. a teacher saw something strange in a ninth grade student's backpack and asked to see it. The student was uncooperative and left the classroom.

The teacher alerted the School Resource Officer and school security who found the student and located the gun in his bag.

The school was on lock-down for one hour, but there were no threats made toward anyone in the school.

The student was arrested and is charged with possession of a firearm with ammunition on school property, possession of a stolen firearm, underage possession of a firearm, and concealment of a firearm.

Additional charges could be added as the investigation continues.

The school principal sent a robo-call to parents and also sent a letter home with students Tuesday.
