WASHINGTON – Corey Stewart, the Virginia campaign chair for Donald Trump, was fired Monday for organizing a protest outside of the Republican National Committee’s headquarters.

Stewart organized the protest on Facebook Sunday:

The Trump Campaignreleased a statement Monday afternoon, announcing the firing:

“Former Virginia State Chairman Corey Stewart is no longer affiliated with the Donald Trump for President campaign. He is being replaced, effective immediately,” Trump deputy campaign manager David Bossie said on the firing. “Corey made this decision when he staged a stunt in front of the RNC without the knowledge or approval of the Trump campaign.”

Stewart posted about starting “a rebellion against GOP establishment” on Monday.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus reiterated his support Monday for embattled Republican nominee Donald Trump. “Nothing has changed in regard with our relationship,” Priebus said in a call with RNC committeemen. He said the Trump campaign and RNC are in full coordination.

Earlier Monday, Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said he would no longer defend Trump, but did not formally rescind his endorsement. Trump’s support in the Republican Party has eroded in the past few days since a 2005 recording surfaced of him making lewd and sexually aggressive comments toward women.
