HAMPTON, Va. – A poll released by Hampton University Monday shows Hillary Clinton 12 points ahead of Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

When Virginians were asked if the election were held today, 46 percent said they would vote for Clinton, while only 34 percent said they would choose Trump. Twenty percent of voters are still undecided.

The difference is a major change from one month ago, when Clinton was only ahead by two points, a statistical dead heat.

The poll was released the day after the second presidential debate, which took place at Washington University in Saint Louis.

Sixty percent of people polled believe that Clinton won the debate, 18 percent believe Trump won and 18 percent believe neither candidate can out on top.

“While every poll is a snapshot in time, the results of this poll are the result of a perfect storm of events in our nation at the time the poll was conducted: domestic terrorist attacks in New York and Minnesota, the first Presidential debate of the election cycle, the fallout and aftermath of that debate, including the controversy concerning a former beauty queen, and, an endorsement by a highly respected former GOP Virginia Senator in favor of the democratic ticket of Clinton and Kaine. Our poll numbers reflect all of those elements” said Kelly Harvey, director of the Hampton University Center for Public Policy.
