Coast Guard rescues eight people from rooftops in North Carolina

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Coast Guard rescued eight people from rooftops Sunday in Pinetops.

Fifth District watchstanders received a report around 9 a.m. that eight people were stranded on top of roofs due to high water.

The group needed to evacuate.

A MH-60 Jayhawk air crew from Air Station Elizabeth City launched and rescued the eight people and took them to Pitt Greenville Airport.

The air crew stayed at the scene to further assess damage and assist any evacuations.

“We were glad to assist our partners from Edgecombe Fire Department in this rescue effort,” said Lt. Cmdr. Scott Koser, Assistant operations officer at Air Station Elizabeth City. “Our crews are standing by to assist our emergency response partners with future requests.”
