Newport News Fire Department responds to four fire calls in 90 minutes

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Fire officials responded to four calls in 90 minutes on Friday.

At 12:40 p.m. fire officials responded to a shed fire in the 200 block of Eastwood Drive. The shed was in heavy flames and investigators have not yet determined what the case of the fire was. The fire remains under investigation and there were no reported injuries.

Three minutes later a residential fire was reported in the 100 block of Clipper Drive. An attached garage and kitchen of a single story home were on fire. Two people were home at the time and both were treated at the scene and released by medics. The garage had heavy fire damage and the home had smoke damage. The cause of this fire is also under investigation.

At 2 p.m. an apartment fire was reported in the 13000 block of Aqueduct Drive. Fire Department officials saw light smoke coming from the second level of the apartment building when they arrived. Officials found a smoldering mattress in an upper level bedroom. The apartment owner was transported to a local hospital for symptoms of smoke inhalation. This fire was caused by children playing with matches, according to fire officials.

At 2:05 p.m. the Fire Department responded to a kitchen fire in an apartment in the 100 block of Abbey Court. Fire officials found light smoke and burned materials on a stove. One person was home at the time of the fire but was not treated for injuries or transported to a hospital. Unattended cooking was the cause of this fire. The stove was unplugged and the occupant was able to remain at the apartment.
