Anti-light rail group makes statement with Neptune Festival sand sculpture

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The “No Light Rail in Virginia Beach” group made a statement through sand sculpture at the Neptune Festival Saturday.

The sculpture read “Not our future, our past. Please vote no light rail.”

The group is opposed to the expansion of The Tide, which runs 7.4 miles from the Eastern Virginia Medical Center through downtown Norfolk to Newtown Road at the border of Virginia Beach.

The group, started by Virginia Beach City Treasurer John Atkinson, created a petition to include a referendum on the light rail in Virginia Beach added to the November 8 ballot. A judge decided in the group’s favor
