ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - Approximately 1 million gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged into an Elizabeth City waterway this week, according to Elizabeth City officials.

The wastewater came from the city's sewage collection system and spilled into Charles Creek of the Pasquotank River.

The discharge started on Wednesday and continued for about 24 hours.

City officials say the Division of Water Quality was notified of the event and is reviewing the matter.

According to city officials, the leak does not put residents at risk. Paul Fredette with Elizabeth City Public works says the leak came from ten manhole covers on Southern Avenue. The leaked untreated wasted water then mixed with standing flood water on the street. When the water finally drained, the waste went with the flood waters down the storm drains and into the river.
