NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A pedestrian was hit and killed by a van on Jefferson Ave. Monday night, according to police.
At 9:42 p.m. Police Dispatch received a call about an accident in the area of Dresden Drive and Jefferson Ave.
A 15 seat passenger van traveling northbound on Jefferson Ave. struck a pedestrian attempting to cross the road on foot.
Police say the driver of the van, a 46-year-old Suffolk man, saw the victim and began to break. The driver changed lanes to avoid hitting the victim, but the victim kept running and ran into the path of the van.
First responders arrived on scene and pronounced the pedestrian deceased a short time later.
The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Duane Jose Champelle.
The driver of the van stayed at the scene.
No charges have been filed and police say the driver was not under the influence at the time of the incident.
