JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. – James City County Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of a fire that damaged a two-story home.

Fire units were dispatched to a home in the 100 block of Brook Haven Drive on Saturday at 8:45 p.m. The Williamsburg Fire Department also responded to the scene.

When crews arrived five minutes later, they saw smoke showing from the second floor of the home. They found a couch on fire in an upstairs room.

Five people were in the home when the fire began and escaped after noticing smoke. No one was injured.

According to fire officials, the smoke alarms in the home did not appear to go off during the fire.

The fire was brought under control just after 9 p.m.

Heavy smoke and fire damage was found throughout the second floor. The first floor of the home had mostly smoke damage.

The James City County Fire Department encourages citizens to test their smoke alarms by pressing and holding the button. If you do not have working smoke alarms please call Fire Administration at 757-220-0626 to have a fire crew come to your home to install new, battery operated smoke alarms free of charge.
