VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – A man who pleaded guilty to murdering his 3-year-old daughter in 2015 was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Wednesday.

Alton Chavis was arrested on May 9, 2015, the day after his daughter was killed.  He was charged with second degree murder.

According to court documents, Chavis was home alone with his daughter, Camber, while her mother was at work. Chavis became frustrated with the girl and threw her into the bathtub, where she hit her head on the shower faucet. He also picked her up several times and dropped her on the floor before placing a pillow over her face and used both hands to hold it down until she stopped moving. Camber then had a seizure.

After Camber’s seizure, Chavis called his wife to come home and the pair took the girl to the hospital. She was evaluated and transported to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters where she was diagnosed with a skull fracture, retinal hemorrhages, subdural hemorrhages, and multiple bruises.  Camber succumbed to her injuries on May 8, 2015. The cause of death was blunt force head injuries.

Camber succumbed to her injuries on May 8, 2015. The cause of death was blunt force head injuries.

In May of 2016, Chavis pleaded guilty to his charge as part of a plea agreement.

The judge accepted the agreement and Chavis was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
