PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Rehabilitation work that was being done at the I-264 Downtown Tunnel is complete.

Thework was to sustain the tunnel‘s useful life beyond the 58-year Public-Private Partnership agreement between Elizabeth River Crossings and the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Motorists can travel between Norfolk and Portsmouth knowing the Downtown Tunnel will be open and their trips will be unhindered by construction related full tunnel closures.

Although construction activities will no longer be the cause of full tunnel closures, maintenance activities will still cause scheduled single and full lane closures in order to keep it functioning.

These maintenance activities include drain cleaning, tunnel washing, jet fan maintenance, and any necessary damage repair.

Work in the West Downtown Tunnel began in August 2013 and work in the East tunnel started in July 2014.
