TORONTO – The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired Melvin Upton Jr. from the San Diego Padres in exchange for right-handed pitcher Hansel Rodriguez. Upton, from Chesapeake, played his high school ball at Greenbrier Christian Academy.

Upton is owed approximately $22 million through the end of next season, and the Padres will cover all but $5 million, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.

Upton is enjoying a bounce-back season. The 31-year-old is hitting .256 with 16 home runs and 45 RBIs.
