One injured after train hits tractor trailer hauling load of rocks in Waverly

WAVERLY, Va. – Virginia State Police are working a tractor-trailer incident involving a train on Route 40, just west of Route 460.

According to police, a tractor trailer hauling a load of rocks was traveling westbound when the driver attempted to cross the railroad tracks. The railroad signal arms came down and hit the trailer of the truck.

A train then struck the trailer, spilling rocks across the roadway.

Two cars were hit by debris and railroad equipment was damaged.

Norfolk Southern is en route to the scene.

Police say one person is injured and will be flown to the hospital.

Route 40 was shut down due to debris on the road. The scene was clear and all lanes reopened to traffic at around 6:45 p.m.

Troopers are investigating the cause of the incident.
