Newport News offers cooling shelters for the community

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Due to the oppressive heat that Virginia will be bearing in the days to come, the City of Newport News will be providing air conditioned facilities to help their community members cool off.

Here are lists of places and times to escape the heat seven days a week unless specified below.

COMMUNITY & SENIOR CENTERS
· Brittingham-Midtown Community Center (570 McLawhorne Drive): 6:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.
· Doris Miller Community Center (2814 Wickham Avenue): 1 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
· Hilton Senior Center (605 Hilton Boulevard): 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
· North Newport News Senior Center (605 South Avenue): 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
· Denbigh Community Center (15198 Warwick Blvd.): 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.
· Downing Gross Cultural Arts Center (2410 Wickham Avenue) 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.

PUBLIC POOLS & BEACH
· Doris Miller Pool (2814 Wickham Avenue): 12 p.m. – 5:45 p.m.
· Brittingham-Midtown Community Center Pool (570 McLawhorne Drive): 6:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.

· Huntington Beach – lifeguards on duty 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

PUBLIC LIBRARIES
· Pearl Bailey Library (2510 Wickham Avenue): M-TH 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Fri – Sat. 10 a.m. -6 p.m.
· Grissom Library (366 DeShazor Drive): M-TH 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Fri – Sat. 10 a.m. -6 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
· Main Street Library – (110 Main Street): M-TH 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Fri – Sat. 10 a.m. -6 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
· South Morrison Library (746 Adams Drive) M – F 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
