NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk City Treasurer Anthony Burfoot attended a "show cause" hearing Wednesday, at the Norfolk Circuit Court in reference to a petition to remove him from office.

On March 1, members of the Citizen Recall Committee went to polling locations to gather signatures for a petition to recall Burfoot.

The group received enough verified signatures to force a recall trial against the city, meaning a court will decide if Burfoot stays in office.

The group needed 4,656 signatures to force a recall trial and got 4,670 signatures.

Today during the hearing, a judge appointed a special prosecutor for the case. He is Mike Herring with the Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.

Burfoot was indicted on eight corruption charges. The federal government is accusing him of using his position as a city official to make business deals.
