NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A man died after being hit by four separate vehicles in the area of Shields Road and Jefferson Avenue Friday.

Police received a call about a crash involving a pedestrian at 9:25 p.m.

When police and medics arrived, they pronounced the victim, 54-year-old Tyrone Patrick of Newport News, dead at the scene.

Friends of Patrick say he had just finished working as a custodian at Woodside High School in Newport News when he was struck by the cars.

Newport News resident Antoinette Lescota says she's not surprised by the incident.

"There needs to be more lights and there needs to be a bus stop like a shelter. There are just so many people standing on the side of the road. Especially at night and it's dangerous," Lescota said.

One of the four cars drove away from the scene. The car was last seen driving south on Jefferson Avenue.

It is described as a dark 4-door sedan, possibly a Nissan Altima. The car should have front end damage as a result of the crash.

The other vehicles remained at the scene and drivers are cooperating with police.
