Norfolk State Athletics placed on probation, stripped of 97 wins, several championship titles

NORFOLK, Va.  – Norfolk State University Athletics has been placed on probation after failing to monitor its eligibility certification process, resulting in improper certifications for student-athletes.

The university vacated three Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships, including: 2009 women’s cross country, 2011 football, and 2011 women’s track and field.

The Spartans will vacate victories from: 2009 women’s bowling (27), 2009 volleyball (9), 2009 football (7), 2010 football (6), 2011 baseball (13), 2011 softball (20), 2011 men’s tennis (6), and 2011 football (9), for a total of 97 victories.

The decision was handed down at noon on Thursday. The decision was a cooperative effort between the university and the NCAA enforcement staff.

The enforcement staff found that Norfolk State did not “establish the proper systems and safeguards to ensure that student-athlete certification met NCAA eligibility standards.”

The violations included student-athletes from: football, men’s basketball, women’s volleyball, women’s tennis, women’s basketball, men’s track, women’s track, softball, bowling, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s tennis, and baseball.
