PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Detectives are continuing their investigation into an assault that left one person dead overnight Sunday.

According to police, they received a call around 11:30 p.m. requesting police and medical assistance to the 3600 block of County Street.

An adult male had been injured in an assault and police found him with a major injury to his head.

Medics responded but were unable to save the victim and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Although the victims identity hasn’t been released, the suspect was identified as 58-year-old Michael Coker of Portsmouth.

Coker was taken into custody and charged with first degree murder.

According to detectives, the suspect and the victim had a verbal altercation earlier in the day. It is believed that the attack on the victim was the direct result of that altercation.
