James City Co. departments to add convenience fee for credit, debit transactions

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. – James City County departments will apply a 2.95% fee to all credit and debit transactions effective July 1.

The departments affected include the Treasurer’s Office, Parks and Recreation, Building Safety and Permits, Colonial Community Corrections and Planning.

The fee will be added to payments made in person, online and by phone.

The County says they are adding the fee because credit and debit card payments cost money to process.

According to County officials, the cost absorbed for accepting the credit and debit payments was about $40,000 in 2008. In 2015, the absorbed cost increased to over $320,000.
