VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – What could be done to prevent the tragedy at the Oceanfront?

A 55-year old woman died after she was hit in the chest with an umbrella on Wednesday. The anchored umbrella took off in a strong gust of wind stabbing Dottie Belk.

The city doesn’t have any policies related to how umbrellas are set-up at the beach. It’s likely there will be discussion about the issue once more information from the investigation is released, according to Mike Eason, the Resort Administrator.

Eason noted how everything that could go wrong did. Something like this has “never been on our radar,” Eason said.

“I don’t understand it,” said Karen West Moten, Belk’s neighbor. “It breaks my heart to know that she’s gone.”
