NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – On Friday teams of second and third-grade students from elementary schools in Newport News will participate in an Engineering Design Challenge.

This challenge tasks the students with using furnished materials to design and build a simple machine to move a cargo container from the port yard to a train.

The challenge is called Shore to Store and it begins with an introduction explaining six simple machines, wedge, inclined plane, wheel and axle, screw, pulley, and lever.

The students will then have a set amount of time to brainstorm, draft designs, and then build their machines.

They will earn points based on their designs and on how well they function.

The Port of Virginia is presenting this challenge which aims to teach students about the basic principles of simple machines, how they work, and how they impact out lives.
