VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Friday kicks off the annual Mount Trashmore Summer Carnival. The event will run from through June 21.

With all of the food, games, and rides, carnival officials are making sure it’s safe all around for your enjoyment.

On Friday morning, Michael Voit and Dennis Young went through and checked each ride to make sure they are up to code.

“We’re checking all the seats and the lap restraints to make sure they’re all intact," Viot, a Virginia Beach Code Inspector, said.

The inspections are part of both state and local regulations.

"These rides get none destructive testing every year, required by the manufacturer. They get ultrasounds, x-ray testing - to make sure the metal doesn’t have any cracks in it," Voit said.

If you’re concerned about possible violence after fights and reports of gunshots last year, officials said those were isolated incidents and they will have more security on hand this year.

City officials also say they're planning to have more light towers out and fencing.

"There will be additional security staffing that will be on site. In addition, we have modified the operating hours," Amy Woodson, a Parks and Recreation Supervisor, said.

Gates will close at 10 p.m. each night.

The carnival ends on June 21st.
