JAMESTOWN-SCOTLAND FERRY SYSTEM TO RUN AT REDUCED CAPACITY

Jamestown-Scotland Ferry motorists that the ferry Williamsburg will remain out-of-service due to an unexpected delay in repairs. The Pocahontas, Surry and Virginia vessels will continue to ferry motorists across the James River using the normal ferry schedule.

Operations will be diminished by approximately 30 vehicles an hour on Friday, May 27, through Monday, May 30, from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. Motorists are advised to please plan accordingly.

VDOT LIFTS MOST LANE CLOSURES FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND TRAVEL

VDOT will suspend most highway work zones and lift lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia from noon, Friday May 27 to noon, Tuesday, May 31.

BEACH TRAFFIC ENCOURAGED TO USE ROUTE 460

While Interstate-64 Widening is in progress in Newport News, James City County and York County, motorists planning a through-trip to Virginia Beach or the Outer Banks are encouraged to use Route 460 as an alternate route to avoid congestion.

TRAVEL-TRENDS MAP HELPS PREDICT PEAK CONGESTION

  • Based on the traffic data, periods of heavy congestion on the most recent Memorial Day weekends was most likely to occur between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday and Monday.
  • Historically, heavy congestion is present on I-95 southbound from Saturday morning to Saturday afternoon.

HAMPTON ROADS HOV SCHEDULE, TUNNELS AND OTHER INFORMATION:

  • I-64/I-264/I-564 HOV diamond lanes – HOV restrictions will be lifted on all HOV diamond lanes on Friday, May 27 and Monday, May 30.
  • I-64 reversible lanes − Lanes will operate on the regular schedule with no HOV restrictions on Friday, May 27 and Monday, May 30.
  • I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) – Local traffic to Virginia Beach is encouraged to use the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT) as an alternative to the HRBT. To Virginia Beach, take I-664 south to the MMMBT. Then take the Portsmouth/Norfolk exit (exit 15A) to I-264 east to Virginia Beach.
  • Travel to Outer Banks – Local traffic to the North Carolina Outer Banks should use I-664 and the MMMBT to save time. From I-664 south, take I-64 west to exit 292, Chesapeake Expressway/I-464/Route 17. Keep left to continue to the Chesapeake Expressway (Route 168), and take Nags Head/Great Bridge (exit 291B) to the Outer Banks.
  • Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) – Tune to 1680 AM to stay informed on Hampton Roads traffic, travel conditions and construction information.

WORK ZONES AND OTHER TRAFFIC ALERTS

While VDOT will lift most lane closures for holiday travel, motorists may encounter permanent work zones or travel delays in the following locations:

Accomack County Route 609 – Road closed for widening project. Use detour.

Dinwiddie County Route 226 – Replacing bridge 0.3 miles east of U.S. 460. Temporary signal directing traffic.

Isle of Wight County U.S. 58 – Replacing bridge over rail tracks and Route 632. Follow detour. Route 680 – Replacing bridge over Stallings Creek. Follow detour.

Newport News I-64 – Widening interstate. Trucks traveling westbound restricted to right lane between Jefferson Avenue (exit 255) and Yorktown Road (exit 247).

Portsmouth I-264 – Constructing Martin Luther King (MLK) Extension. Right lanes closed both directions between Portsmouth Boulevard and Effingham Street. Two lanes open to traffic.

Richmond U.S. 360 – Replacing bridge deck. Traffic limited to two lanes on Mechanicsville Turnpike over I-64, with one travel lane each direction. Ramp from eastbound U.S. 360 to westbound I-64 remains closed. Follow posted detour.

VIRGINIA BEACH ROAD WORK:

  • *****Elbow Rd closed to all traffic, the closure will last for five months until September 1st, 2016. The detour will be in place via Centerville Turnpike to Kempsville Rd to Indian River Rd and vise versa. ******
  • Lynnhaven Parkway closed from Albright Dr to Dalrymple St. The closure is part of the Lynnhaven Parkway project that is ongoing through the Kempsville section of the city. A detour will be in place and will vary as construction progresses.  Access to the neighborhood maintained at all times. The closures will be in place through September 2016.

CONSTRUCTION AND LANE CLOSURES:  For the week of May 27, 2016 through June 3, 2016

 *There will be no lane closures along Hampton Roads Interstates from noon Friday, May 27, 2016 until noon Tuesday, May 31, 2016 for the Memorial Weekend Holiday*
  • I-64 Widening Project, Newport News/York County: Single-lane closures eastbound and westbound May 31-June 2 as early as 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning. All work will take place between Camp Peary and Lee Hall, and one lane will remain open to traffic at all times. Please check http://i64widening.org for the latest closure/detour information.
  • Elizabeth River Tunnels/Martin Luther King, Jr. Freeway:  Please check Elizabeth River Tunnels website for the latest closure and detour information regarding the Downtown Tunnel, Midtown Tunnel and the MLK Freeway.
  • Terminal Boulevard Resurfacing, Norfolk: Full directional weekend consecutive closures eastbound (traveling from Hampton Boulevard towards I-564) as follows:
  • Friday, June 3 to Monday, June 6 from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.
  • I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel: Alternating closures eastbound and westbound. One lane will remain open at all times:
  • Eastbound June 1-2 from 9 p.m. until 4:30 a.m. the following morning.
  • I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel: Alternating lane closures as follows. One lane will remain open at all times:
  • Northbound/Southbound May 31 from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. and June 1-2 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m
  • I-564 Eastbound/Westbound, Norfolk: Daytime and night-time single-lane closures as follows. One lane will remain open at all times:
    • Westbound June 2 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the I-564 Runway Tunnel
  • I-64 Westbound Willoughby Bay Bridge, Norfolk: Single-lane closures westbound May 31-June 2 from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning. One lane will remain open at all times.
  • I-64 Westbound, York County/James City County: Alternating lane closures westbound May 31-June 2 from 9 p.m. to as late as 6 a.m. the following morning between Camp Peary and the James City County Line. One lane will remain open at all times.
  • I-64 Eastbound, York County: Single-lane closures westbound May 31-June 2 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning between Camp Peary and Lightfoot. One lane will remain open at all times.
  • VA-199 over College Creek Eastbound/Westbound, York County: Alternating lane closures as follows. One lane will remain open to traffic at all times.
    • Eastbound May 31-June 2 from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. the following morning.
  • I-95 over Otter Dam Creek Northbound/Southbound, Emporia: Single-lane closures northbound and southbound June 1-3 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. One lane will remain open at all times.
  • I-95 Bridge Replacement over the Meherrin River Southbound, Emporia: Consecutive single-lane closures southbound as follows. One lane will remain open at all times:
    • Southbound May 31-June 2 from 12 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning between Exit 13 and 11 at the Greensville County and Town of Emporia Line
  • Route 301 Northbound, Greensville County: Left-lane consecutive closure on Route 301 northbound May 2-June 3. The right lane will remain open at all times.
  • Route 680 over Stallings Creek, Isle of Wight County: Full consecutive closure on Route 680 over Stallings Creek for bridge replacement May 16 through June 2017.
  • George Washington Memorial Highway (Route 17), York County: Crews are widening the road between Route 630 (Wolf Trap Road) and Route 706 (Hampton Highway). Daytime single-lane closures, from 9 a.m.to 3 p.m. and weeknight single-lane closures, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Expect traffic shifts and delays.
