Virginia Beach, Va. -Jessica Williams and her dog were out shopping in Town Center Wednesday.

“I  get to benefit from all the new stores coming,” Williams explained. “I love walking to all the new places.”

Places including a new Nordstrom Rack and DSW, which opened last month at Pembroke Mall.

Mayor Will Sessoms says much of the new development through the city stems from the success of Town Center.

'Because we have said earlier - malls have failed across the county, and even locally,” Mayor Sessoms said. “That is not the case for Pembroke Mall. It is thriving and growing today."

Growth that continues throughout the city. Town Center's developers are working on a $32 million mixed-use project.

This will include street-level retail and restaurant space and 120 luxury apartment homes.

“It brings in more tax revenue, and the larger tax revenue we can bring in from commercial real estate from sales tax on food and beverage, that allows is to do more within the city,” the Mayor said.

Yesterday, Norfolk announced plans regarding their outlet mall, which boarders Virginia Beach.

But the mayor says the city is not involved with the project.

"Anything that brings people to our city and our region is a benefit,” Sessoms explained.

The mayor says more development is planned throughout the city.
