Car hit by train in Suffolk

Auto-trainSUFFOLK, Va. – Police are investigating a single vehicle accident involving a Norfolk Southern train that happened Saturday morning.

Police and Fire & Rescue personnel were called to the intersection of South Saratoga Street and Carolina Avenue in downtown Suffolk around 1:30 a.m.

Police found that 30-year-old Piedra Pender, of Portsmouth, was driving westbound on Hall Avenue in an Acura sedan when she veered right and became stuck on a set of tracks in the eastbound lane. A Norfolk Southern train was traveling westbound and struck the car Pender was driving.

Crossing arms were down when the incident occurred.

Pender sustained minor injuries and was treated on the scene. A 26-year-old male passenger was taken to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries.

Pender was issued a summons for Failure to Stop at a Railroad Grade Crossing.
